Max Furmański

Max Furmański

rabbi and cantor born in Sejny (1934). Leaving Poland in 1945 he swore never to return. He carried with him the terrible experience of concentration camps, partisan warfare, the loss of his loved ones. He wrote a book „Through the Holocaust” published in English, Spanish and Yiddish currently being translated into Hebrew.

His postwar travels took him to Argentina where he met his wife Hilda and was a rabbi for eighteen years. He then spent many years in the USA where he was a cantor before settling in Israel where he lives to this day. On the 21st and 22nd of May, 2002 on the initiative of Max Furmański and Borderland a memorial stone was unveiled in the Jewish cemetery in Sejny with the text „To the memory of the Jews of Sejny – the citizens of Sejny”. The ambassador of Israel, Szewach Weiss took part in the ceremony along with several hundred other people.
