Solidarity Academy in Krasnogruda / 10-13 I 2017

The Solidarity Academy is bringing journalists from all around the world to discuss on several topics such as Eastern Partnership, European Affairs and Refugee Crisis.

It is an international project aimed at inspiring and supporting the development of the young intellectual elites across Europe. The project’s title refers to the Polish social movement Solidarność (Solidarity) and the peaceful socio-political transformations that took place in Poland and other countries of Central and Eastern Europe. In such movements we can find inspiration for solving the problems of the modern world.

The Solidarity Academy, created by the European Solidarity Centre, has been gathering the young intelectual elites for more than 10 years. Workshops and tasks that the participants deal with are both theoretical and practical. The participants have the opportunity to work in a big, international team, in smaller expert groups and individually under the supervision of a trainer. The workshops culminate in a public debate and a series of articles prepared by participants.

Participants about visit in Krasnogruda

Ester Neuberger, absolwentka Akademii Solidarności 2016:

Our visit to Centrum Pogranicze certainly made a long-lasting impression on me, as someone, who has a background in Jewish Studies and (critical) Nationalism Studies. So no doubt it was a stimulating and inspiring experience for me.

However, the reflection I would like to make is a really simple one. I find it a truly respectful hommage to the perished Jewish community of Sejny that the synagogue and the yeshiva next to it are used as a space to connect the several - in many ways - separated ethno-cultural groups of inhabitants of this borderland town:

These painfully abandoned buildings could not possibly have a better function.

Adam Reichardt, New Eastern Europe:

I wonder if there is any other small city in Poland that knows so much about its own history as Sejny? Indeed, after having watching Kroniki sejneńskie we all got a chance to meet its fascinating history – like so many people before. There is a magical inspiration that exists in this tiny town in the far north-east of Poland. I am glad we had a chance to be a part of this magic and I know that it has impacted our work. Our experience in Sejny will not be forgotten and I feel that we not only left a part of ourselves there, but had a chance to bring a part of Sejny back with us.
