The Old Yeshiva - Sejny Jazz Cooperative

The former yeshiva was opened in roughly 1846. Its creator was a known religious philosopher, called Moses Avigdor Yitzhak. The school enjoyed a good reputation among the supporters of the Jewish Enlightenment, and became - briefly - the center of the Haskalah (Enlightenment) movemeny for the whole Lithuania. This is where the greatest rabbis held conferences. Jewish Talmudic school existed until 1939. After the war, the building housed a slipper factory. In October 1990, the "Borderland", by a decision of the City Council in Sejny, had been in use some of the rooms of the former yeshiva. This was the first headquarters of the "Borderland of arts, cultures, nations" Centre, and the Borderland Foundation. Sejny Jazz Cooperative and a music studio are placed there now.

Young musicians, involved in Borderland's music projects are co-hosts and the participants of the Jazz Cooperative. Michał Moniuszko is it's leader and co-founder. Main activities held here, are mostly concerts of various music formations, and music workshops, with young musicians from Sejny. The stage, so far, hosted many jazz bands, including: Baaba, Asocjacja Hagaw, Cukunft, Marcin Olak Trio, Pink Freud, Trifonidis Orchestra, Shofar, Blues Fellows, Mitch & Mitch, Mizrachi, Nefesh Ha-Tichoma, Paris Tetris, etc. It is also a meeting place, where the Klezmer Orchestra gathers its audience after concerts, if they are wishing to continue the musical evening.

Concerts are held on Fridays, from 13 July to 10 August.

The cooperative is open every day except Monday, from 12:00 to ... as long as the musicians have the strength.
You can also drink a coffee (that's actually not bad) and read a newspaper here.
