Angels of Sejny

Angels of Sejny

"At first we thought about the monuments in Sejny, not the angels. But these are angels that our city needs. We wanted our city be protected by the angels. Out of the rugs the patrons of the town started to come out. We called into life the Angel of Providence who glances at each Jewish booth, visits forge and pork-butcher's shop, takes care of each market-fair, whether with mushrooms or with domestic animals and country food..."

Sejny Angels were created during Sejny Chronicles workshop. In 1998 a group of Polish, Lithuanian, and Russian Old-believers' children created the map of their town, then its clay model, and theter spectacle about the angels who descent to the city at night, listen to the songs, prayers, and stories.

The angels, made of patchwork, were woven with colorful clothes, and given the names: the Angel of Love, the Angel of Peace, the Angel of Music, the Angel of Providence, the Angel of Household, the Angel of Life, the Angel of Bread and Water, the Angel od Death, the Angel of Human Wisdom.
