Lidia Ostałowska

- Polish journalist, reporter, writer and social activist. One of the founders and member of the board of the ITAKA Foundation.

About herself:

I was born in 1954, in Warsaw. I studied Polish philology at Wasaw Univeristy. I read Krall, Kapuściński, Szejnert and other writers seldom remembered today. I wanted to become a journalist. I succeeded and wrote for "Przyjaciółka", then for the "ITD" weekly magazine.

This lasted only for a short time, then came the martial law and verification of journalists. I got dismissed. But, the underground Solidarity was no less exciting. After the breakthrough I chanced to work for "Gazeta Wyborcza" where Małgorzata Szejnert edited the texts of reportages. That was the most significant professional lesson of my life (not only of writing but also of passing my knowledge to my junior colleagues).

I'm patciularly attached to the Roma. I collaborate with the, published in Oświęcim, Romani quarterly  „Dialog-Pheniben”. I enjoy reportage and preparing captions for photos. My great passion are forms that combine different types of reports – reporting in picture, sound and word. Therefore, I'm an active member of the documentarist foundation OPOWIEDZ TO – PICTURE THIS.
