Maxim Bespalov

The Borderland is happy to have hosted and helped another resident from the Borderland/Ukraine programme.

Maxim Bespalov (born in 1983) is a writer, journalist, playwright, traveler, blogger and TV presenter from Ukraine. The author of six books, most of which are written in the genre of artistic reportage. Among Maxim's works, we can name the novel The Eastern Wall, as well as the books of reportages Ukrainian Svalbard and All You Know about Ireland Is True, But... The recent book written by Maxim Bespalov is a nonfiction novel The Best Book about Camino, which was published in January 2023. This book tells about the pilgrimage of the Way of St. James.

During his residence in Krasnogruda, Maxim Bespalov worked on the novel Finding Eva. This novel is a documentary-fiction story about the war, pandemic and emigration. But the plot of this work doesn't take place in our time, but a hundred years ago during the First World War and the Spanish flu pandemic. The plot of this book is based on the story of a real Ukrainian family that emigrated from Galicia to America at the beginning of the 20th century. Maksym found the grave of one of the members of this family in a cemetery in the ghost town of Centralia (Pennsylvania), and decided to investigate the life history of this Ukrainian woman named Eva from birth in a small village in Carpatians to the death from Spanish flu in the USA.
Maxim's residency lasted between 5 January and 5 February 2023.
