The host of the event was ICES – the Institute for Central European Strategy. Apart from the representative of the Borderland there were more than 30 leading intellectuals from 7 countries. The hosts of the Uzhhorod conference summarized it in the Facebook entry:
More than 30 leading intellectuals from 7 countries came to Zakarpattia to discuss and create the future of Europe. This is how the results of the International Mobile Academy “Dilemma”, which took place in Uzhhorod on May 8-12, can be briefly characterized.
As part of the Dilemma, a panel discussion “The Dilemma of Europe's Geopolitical Loneliness: Finding a Way Out of the Dark Ages” was held to mark Europe Day. The Academy participants also gave four open lectures and held a series of expert discussions on topics related to European integration and the challenges posed to Europe by Russian aggression against Ukraine.
The two days of the academy ended with screenings of new Ukrainian and Georgian films, after which the audience had the opportunity to talk to the filmmakers.
A special event was a scientific and cultural expedition to the south of Transcarpathia, to Vynogradiv and Berehove, to learn about the history of this corner of Transcarpathia and to meet with representatives of local government, local Hungarian organizations, and intellectuals. In Vynohradiv, in partnership with the local initiative “City Impulse,” the Dilemma participants held an open art event, “Cafe Europe,” and ended their city tour with a minute of silence and a flower laying at the monument to the fallen defenders of Ukraine.
The Academy's activities do not end: there are many more interesting webinars ahead, a summer school in Poland awaits the participants this August, and the next Dilemma meeting will take place in late fall in Georgia.
The Dilemma Mobile Academy is an international project implemented by our Institute in cooperation with the Borderland Foundation from Poland, the Pen Club of Armenia, and the Georgian Literary Initiative with the support of the European Commission. The project brings together intellectuals, artists, cultural figures, academic professors and civic activists who, through the synergy of experiences and ideas, develop a value-based platform for deepening European organization and cultural exchange in the face of global challenges and threats.
