The Borderland is happy to recommend the essay by Krzysztof Czyżewski and published in Arrowsmith Press.

The essay is available here.

It is called ‘’Towards a Deep Culture: A practitioner’s reflections” and is a modified version of Krzysztof Czyżewski’s lecture that he delivered while receiving the Princess Margriet European Culture Award in Amsterdam in 2018.

In the essay we read about the real bridges as the means of crossing the impassable and invisible bridges that are necessary in order to establish a good and friendly community. Two quotations are crucial:

An invisible bridge cannot be built by those who are convinced that they are on the right or better side, or who see their help to others as a means of assimilation. Consequently, any collaboration will be based on the latter’s awareness and acceptance of the former’s assistance so they can fully join the giver.

An invisible bridge is not raised as a ready and closed construction. Nor can it be imported from the outside world because its building blocks comprise matter originating in the milieu in which it is formed.

Arrowsmith is named after the late William Arrowsmith, a renowned classics scholar, literary and film critic. Arrowsmith taught in Boston University's University Professors Program.
