Wojciech Szroeder

Wojciech Szroeder - cultural animator, theatre director, musician.

He was born in 1961, studied at the Higher Pedagogical School in Słupsk. In the 1980s, one of the animators of cultural life in northern Poland. He was a member of the "Stop" theater group. Co-creator of cyclical cultural meetings in Czarna Dąbrówka entitled "Artistic Village". In 1989, one of the founders of the "Pogranicze" Foundation and the "The Borderland of Arts, Cultures, Nations Centre" in Sejny.

He is a co-creator of activities carried out by "Pogranicze", including: "Central European Cultural Forum", "Open Regions of Central and Eastern Europe" (Transylvania, Bosnia, Bukovina, Spiš), "Borderland School", "Man of the Borderland", "Camera Pro Minoritate".

He led the educational and cultural program "Cultural Heritage Class", recognizing both the multicultural territorial heritage of Sejneńszczyzna and multiethnic regions of Central and Eastern Europe. Co-founded youth theater group "Teatr Sejneński" (he is, among others, co-creator of the performances "Dybuk" and "Wijuny").

He is the creator of the "Sejny Theatre Klezmer Orchestra", a multi-generational musical formation, referring to traditional Jewish music which becomes an inspiration for the modern compositions, performed in Poland and around the world. He is the co-creator of the international program "The Musicians' Raft between New York and Sejny", which met masters of klezmer music from America and Europe with young musicians associated with this tradition from Central and Eastern Europe.

  • In 2018, he received the "Award of the Marshal of the Podlaskie Voivodeship" for all his animation and educational activities, including: creating and directing the "Sejny Theatre Klezmer Orchestra"since 1996.
