For many years Marci Shore and Timothy Snyder have formed an exceptional intellectual partnership, both in life and in their work, devoted to building a “connective tissue” between people, academic disciplines in the humanities, and cultures. They are both historians, but also writers, philosophers, and civic society activists. As Americans of Jewish and Quaker heritage, they have dedicated their lives to resisting violence and the distortions of authoritarian regimes, to confronting imperial and colonial mentalities, and to challenging history written by the victors.
As part of the celebrations accompanying the awarding of the title Borderland Person of the Year to Timothy Snyder and Marci Shore, Sejny and Krasnogruda will host a festival of lectures, books (including a new book by Marci Shore), artistic events, and public debates devoted to their lives and work. We warmly invite you to join us on 20–22 August. The culmination of the celebrations will be the Mystery of the Bridge.
The title Borderland Person of the Year is an award granted by the Borderland Foundation and the “Borderland Centre – of Arts, Cultures, and Nations”. It is awarded to individuals whose life and work have significantly contributed to the dissemination of the ethos of the Borderland: an open and tolerant attitude, grounded in understanding and respect for otherness, overcoming stereotypes and prejudice, and building bridges of understanding between people of different nationalities and cultures.
