The Klezmer Orchestra of the Sejny Theatre in Kraków

The Klezmer Orchestra of the Sejny Theatre in Krakow, July 2023

The Borderland is happy to announce that the Klezmer Orchestra of the Sejny Theatre had an opportunity to perform for the audience of this year’s edition of Jewish Culture Festival in Kraków.

The Orchestra performed in Krakow after a five-year-long break. This year’s edition of the festival was devoted to RUAH – the term whose basic meaning in Hebrew means ‘’air”.

The Orchestra performed with Frank London and Lorin Sklamberg, the New Yorkers from The Klezmatics and the founding fathers of the Jewish revival in the USA. The artists provided the audience with the pieces of music that had been prepared during the 2022 edition of Musicians’ Raft programme in Sejny.

The Orchestra performed in Krakow twice. The friday concert (30 June) took place in the Museum of Municipal Engineering. After the performance the Sejny musicians went to Alchemia, which is one of the most famous clubs in Kazimierz, where they took part in the night jam session.

Next day the Orchestra was one of the bands to play during the Shalon on Szeroka street. This event is a traditional ending to the Festival and it gathers crowds of listeners and lovers of Jewish music. Not only did the Orchestra play their own set, but also joined other musicians and took part in performing a piece of music that was the final of the Shalom concert and the whole festival.

Jewish Culture Festival was first organized in 1988. Now it is the biggest and one of the most prestigious festivals of Jewish culture in the world.
