The Borderland is happy to inform about two events that took place thanks to the work of the Music of the Place studio.

In October the Music of the Place studio organized an event which consisted of the sound installation, multimedia presentation, and concert at the White Synagogue in Sejny. This event was the official premiere of the “Music of the Place” sound guide to Sejny, which we have been developing within the smartphone app Echoes. The premiere took place on October 17, 2024, at 6:00 PM.

In November, we shared a recording of our recent activities within the Music of the Place studio. In recent months, it was filled with a sound workshop for practitioners and field recording researchers.

The Music of the Place Studio has been telling the story of the town of Sejny for years, combining the qualities of sound with the art of memory. The sound map created in recent months was based on the smartphone app Echoes — a tool that enables the construction of a spatial, multilayered history of the place.
For the workshop, outstanding sound artists, theorists, and field recording practitioners came to Sejny, working with young people and local musicians. The sound map became a polyphonic narrative of the place, with paths that include the memories of Sejny’s oldest residents, melodies of Polish-Lithuanian voices, whispers of the Jewish world, as well as the imagination of young Polish composers and the town’s architecture, where nature resonates after dusk or from afar.
