Mirt
Tomek Mirt has for many years been creating a form of electronic music that is difficult to classify, freely drawing on motifs ranging from the avant-garde to those derived from the fringes of club music, weaving them together with field recordings that function not merely as ornament but as an equal element shaping both the sound and the composition itself. He also draws inspiration from beyond European culture.
The result is a collage that resembles a soundtrack or even a soundscape, often related to the idea of Fourth World music: free, improvised, yet marked by repetition and a sense of trance-like continuity.
He performs solo as well as in projects such as Mirt+Ter and Brasil and the Gallowbrothers Band. He has released dozens of albums issued by labels in Poland, Italy, and the USA. Many of his records were self-released through the now-inactive label cat|sun, currently succeeded by Oddities of Nature. He also runs the label Saamleng, dedicated exclusively to field recordings, publishing both his own work and that of other artists.
Field recording runs through his practice as an integral component of composition, while also maintaining its own autonomous space as a separate and significant strand of work.
He has composed music for films and installations (Ślepnąc od świateł, Expo 2020 Dubai, Sound Monument at KL Płaszów). He has performed in Poland and internationally, including at festivals such as Unsound, HCMF, OFF, Flussi, Donau, WIF, and Sacrum Profanum.
He is a co-founder of Xaoc Devices, a company designing modular synthesizers. He co-created the magazines Zine and M|I, and was a co-founder of MonotypeRec. As a graphic designer, he has created visual identities for numerous Polish record labels.
